Guided Walks on the Kylemore Abbey Estate

Discover the hidden trails of the Kylemore Abbey Estate on one of Connemara’s most spectacular mountain hikes

Hike the re-discovered mountain trails on the Kylemore Estate with our trained guide. The hiking trails date back to when Mitchell Henry first developed the estate in the late 1800s. The Henry family enjoyed these invigorating hikes with their friends and family and used them when hunting on the hills.

Our Guided walk will take you through the old oak forest, to highpoints with views over the Kylemore Valley, Connemara mountains and lakes and all the way to the Atlantic Ocean.
Experience the outdoors, beautiful scenery and learn about the fascinating history of Kylemore and Connemara.

Along the hike your guide will point out interesting and hidden features of the estate. There will be plenty of photo opportunities along the way.

Our Guides

Our guides have in depth knowledge of the estate, its unique flora, fauna and geology. Their passion for this beautiful estate will inspire you! English, Dutch, French and German speaking guides are available on request.

There are two hikes to choose from; 1 hour hike to the Sacred Heart statue and 2.5/3 hour extended hike.

1 hour hike

Hike to the Sacred Heart statue. The statue was erected by the Benedictine Nuns in 1932 when Ireland hosted the Eucharistic Congress. The nuns erected the statue to give thanks for the safe arrival from Belgium during World War I.

1 Hour Hike Cost:
1 to 14 participants: €15 per person including entry to the Kylemore Estate, Abbey, Walled Garden, Gothic Church, etc.  Min. participants required per hike: 6 people. For hikes with less than 6 participants a €40 fee is required per group plus a reduced price estate entry rate of €8 per participant.

2.5 – 3 hour hike

Let our guide take you on an extended hike on the mountain at Kylemore. Perfect for hikers wishing to experience more history, higher paths and even more spectacular views.
2.5-3 Hour Hike Cost:
1 to 14 participants: €18 per person including entry to the Kylemore Estate, Abbey, Walled Garden, Gothic Church, etc.  Min. participants required per hike: 6 people. For groups less than 6 participants a €60 fee is required per group plus a reduced price estate entry rate of €8 per participant.

Please note:

Hill walking and hiking is not devoid of risk. The paths have sections of loose stones and depending on the weather may be slippery. The paths cross wet boggy ground, small streams and steep ground as the paths reaches heights of 300m above the Abbey.
To minimize the risk ensure you have appropriate hiking footwear, rain gear, extra warm clothes and/or sunscreen and a small bottle water with you.
Participants must be aged 14 years and over. Participants under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult. Participants should have a reasonable level of fitness.

How to book at guided mountain hike at Kylemore Abbey

• Advanced booking is required for guided hikes. To book a hike please call the Kylemore Abbey Visitor Centre on +353 95 52001 or email bookings@kylemoreabbey.com
• 24 hour notice is required to book a hike.
• The Kylemore Abbey Visitor Centre is open 7 days a week from 9am to 6pm (July & August, 9am to 7pm).
• A credit card and contact phone number is required to secure a booking.
• All Guided Hikes are subject to guide availability, weather and safety considerations. Kylemore Tourism Ltd. reserves the right to cancel a hike.
• Cancelations can only be accepted up to 24 hours before the scheduled hike. For cancelations less than 24 hours the full cost of the hike will be charged.
• Maximum group size is 14, for larger groups a second guide can be booked.

 

Booking is required. 24 hour notice is preferred.
